Glühwein aus Heidelbeerwein
|
Wein- und Sektkellerei Ostrau
|
Vine varieties:
Pinot noir
Glühwein Ingredients:
Red "Glow Wine" (Glühwein) for 8 to 10 drinks.
- 1 liter ( = 1 3/4 pint) dry and not too weak red wine
- 8 pieces of cube sugar (or the matching amount of honey)
- 1 orange (you need it with skin, so the skin MUST NOT contain
any chemical stuff !!!)
- 4 cloves
- 1 bar of cinnamon (NO cinnamon powder, because it makes the
stuff cloudy !) |
|
Preparation:
Put the cube sugar in a pot and pour the red wine over it. Cut
orange WITH skin in thin slices and also give it into the pot.
Add the cloves and the cinnamon bar. Heat the whole stuff slowly
(middle heat) until it ALMOST boils. It shall not boil!
Afterwards let it stand at little heat for about
15 minutes. Get the spices out of the wine by pouring it through
a sieve directly before serving.
Glühwein is meant to be served hot. It CAN be heated again,
but then it will lose aroma so it is best to cook it fresh.
Also the quality of the glühwein increases with the quality
of the red wine used.
Recommendable are most French, Italian and also some German
red wines. Less recommendable are for example chilean, south
african or californian red wines. They are either too sweet
or too strong of aroma. but it makes also no sense to use a
too expensive wine. In germany I take a red wine of a price
of 7 or 8 marks. ($3 to $4)
In Germany it is quite common to add a shot of hard stuff (as
in rum, wodka, etc.) per drink.
As a variation you can also use a spicy white wine, for example
Muskat or Pinot Tokayer.
