Chile's wine regions extend 250 miles north
and south squeezed along the country's narrow Valle Central,
a fertile band whose hot climate is strongly influenced by cool,
coastal fog and breezes from the Pacific Ocean while from the
east the Andes Mountains contribute cool nights. Regional characters
are slowly emerging, as wine-makers improve at planting varietals
in suitable terrain and at developing vineyards that reflect
the qualities of their terrior.
The Spanish were 19th century pioneers here
with vineyard holdings that now have well known names like Errazuriz,
Conch y Toro and Undurrago. A decade ago, international demand
for inexpensive varietal wines
discovered Chile's favorable natural conditions and low production
costs and today much of Chile's wine industry is being pushed
by foreign investment. U.S. industry leaders like Kendall-Jackson,
Beringer, and Mondavi have established major holdings in Chile
to supply good-value, quality wines.
