Chile's wine regions extend 250 miles north and south squeezed along the country's narrow Valle Central, a fertile band whose hot climate is strongly influenced by cool, coastal fog and breezes from the Pacific Ocean while from the east the Andes Mountains contribute cool nights. Regional characters are slowly emerging, as wine-makers improve at planting varietals in suitable terrain and at developing vineyards that reflect the qualities of their terrior. The Spanish were 19th century pioneers here with
vineyard holdings that now have well known names like Errazuriz,
